Training, Communications and Outreach

VA Privacy Service offers a comprehensive Privacy Training program to educate Privacy Officers (POs) and staff about privacy policy, strategy and innovation. The Communications and Outreach program leads the charge in spreading privacy awareness both inside and outside of VA, highlighting the critical role we all have to play in safeguarding Veteran and employee sensitive information.

Privacy Training

The Privacy Officer Professionalization Training (POPT) program provides POs with information and resources necessary to support the development of knowledge required to meet the needs of a PO at VA. The objective of the POPT program is to better prepare privacy staff across VA to accomplish their professional duties. The program provides on-demand, live delivery and an evolving library of learning and professional development tools.

  • • Live and On-Demand Webinars
  • • Job training aids
  • • Procedures, research papers and helpful guides
  • • National Privacy Officer Forum
  • • Self-assessment tools
  • • Privacy Officer Development Plan

Communications and Outreach

The Communications and Outreach Program supports VA Privacy Service’s mission by spreading privacy awareness through branded campaigns. Emphasizing how privacy is both a necessity and a priority at VA, we leverage focus groups with Veterans and employees to develop communications products, conferences, outreach, partnerships and symposia that has helped VA Privacy Service become the centralized, go-to source for information and tools to respect privacy and protect Veteran and VA employee data.

We implement three campaigns to spread privacy awareness across VA.

Privacy Matters Logo

Privacy Matters. This effort provides privacy education, resources and best practices to Veterans, their beneficiaries and other external stakeholders. We hold events throughout the year (speakers’ series, symposia, webinars and Capitol Hill briefings) attended by those working in the privacy arena.

Privacy Builds Trust Logo

Privacy Builds Trust. This effort features videos, posters, fact sheets and webinars targeting VA employees reinforcing that privacy is a priority at VA.

More Than a Number Logo

More Than a Number. This effort underscores that each piece of PII— birth date, Social Security number (SSN) or mailing address — is more than a number; it’s an identity and must be kept safe. The campaign provides a toll-free hotline (1-855-578-5492) and online resources to help Veterans protect their data and report data theft.
